What is it?

Public speaking is a core program of the Freedom Writers Foundation because addressing audiences is a powerful way to share the Freedom Writers story and inspire others.  The Freedom Writers regularly speak to and provide workshops for audiences ranging from students to educators to school administrators and incarcerated youth nationwide.  Freedom Writer presentations are especially meaningful for at-risk students, educators, and those interested in diversity and tolerance.

Who are the speakers?

The speakers are Erin Gruwell's original Freedom Writer students, authors of the book The Freedom Writers Diary and those portrayed in the film Freedom Writers.  Click here for additional information on the Freedom Writers story.

What do they talk about?

Freedom Writers share their inspiring personal stories of triumph - many of them faced tough odds, growing up in poor neighborhoods affected by racism and violence.  Many of the Freedom Writers were personally affected by gangs and the racial divide that resulted from the O.J. Simpson verdict and subsequent riots.  They share stories of homes plagued by substance abuse, physical and mental abuse, absent parents, and learning disabilities.  Most of them disliked school and didn't expect to graduate high school, or in some cases even survive it.

The Freedom Writers share their incredible journeys of transformation while focusing on the power of writing.  They share stories of how reading and journaling sparked a change that began a long process of introspection for them, which ultimately re-charted their lives.  While presentations can be tailored, themes generally include:

  • Diversity and tolerance
  • The power of reading, writing, and finding one’s own voice
  • The importance of education
  • Avoiding involvement with gangs and the criminal justice system
  • Having pride in one’s heritage and becoming a positive role model
  • The key to their teacher’s success

What is the format?

It is recommended that one or two Freedom Writers deliver a one-hour presentation, followed by a book signing/photo session. Question and answer sessions can be included in the one-hour presentation, or they can be arranged to start immediately following the presentation. Presentation length can be adjusted based on your needs.

How long does it take to schedule a speaking engagement?

Please submit your application at least four weeks prior to your proposed event date.  Some exceptions can be made, particularly for local events where no airline reservations are required (we are based in Long Beach, California).

Is there a fee?

Yes.  The honorarium allows the Foundation to compensate the Freedom Writers for their time and service, while also supporting the Foundation's programs.  Every request is considered on a case by case, and we consider all requests regardless of whether there is funding for an honorarium.* More details on suggested compensation will be provided once your application is received.

In addition to an honorarium, sponsors must pay for travel expenses including airfare, hotel accommodations, ground transportation and meals.  A 50% deposit is required at the time of contract signature in order to reserve the date on our calendar, and book travel arrangements.

*Just as the original Freedom Writers did, we encourage you and your students to become invested in this process by fundraising together to bring the Freedom Writers to your community. Click here for fundraising ideas. We also encourage you to think big, and consider partnering with other schools, districts, and community partners to make the event a large one, where multiple parties can share the costs.

How do I request guest speakers?

The first step is to fill out the online application below.  Submitting an application does not guarantee that your request has been granted.  You will receive a response within two weeks of submitting your application.  If there are any difficulties please email Lisa Smith at lisa@freedomwritersfoundation.org.
